I think that the toughest challenge with regard to selecting colleges to apply to, and ultimately attend, is the predictable clash between the parental desire to send the student to the “Best” school money can buy, and the college applicants own priorities, ie., “where will I be happy”.  If kids thought like their parents – this would be a simple process.  However, most kids don’t share their parent’s priorities (ultimately that is probably a good thing). 

The exercise is further complicated by the fact that as much as one quarter of a million dollars is involved in the decision.  Having Michelle help our son with his selection process got us as parents, out of the middle of this emotional and stressful process and allowed Michelle and Alex to explore what was best for Alex – NOT what we thought as parents was best for him. 

Ultimately an education is the greatest gift you can give to your child (after love and acceptance), but it needs to be a smart decision made by the student.  Michelle met with Alex on multiple occasions to explore what options might make sense for our son and ultimately they were able to select a dozen schools to apply to --- all of which we were very pleased with.   Most importantly, Alex owned the process in making his college decisions – something that might not have ever happened if we had stayed in the middle of the search process.

Considering the magnitude of the effort it would have been an enormous mistake NOT to take full advantage of Michelle’s experience and unique abilities.  I would strongly urge every family to leverage what Michelle Roatch knows in order to help their daughter or son make the best college decision possible.
